“The Countess of Gruyère, young, beautiful, nice and good, was sorry. She cried, prayed and abundant alms. She wanted to get what she wanted. The bells of the old church of Gruyeres announced Christmas. The night was cold and snowing in large flakes. The whole castle was jubilant Christmas. Taking advantage of the general enthusiasm, the Countess sneaked out of the castle, and, in the dark, s’en vint prier à la chapelle dédiait à saint Jean le Précurseur.”
