“Dans le cadre de la recherche sur Les arts du consortage comme manœuvres collaboratives, l’artiste américaine Ericka Beckman est invitée pour une conférence autour des projets récents qui questionnent l’optimisation du monde du travail et du cadre de vie. Stalk (2021) est sa première performance réalisée lors du festival Performa à New York et documentée en vidéo. Cette réinterprétation du conte Jack and the magic bean, a fable popularized in the 19th century, puts into play its morality which suggests the unlimited opportunities of capitalism. While the narrative is structured by the metaphor of social ascent, the artist works on the opposition between the worlds of the bottom and the top by means of a decor that combines an animated sculpture of the magic bean and images broadcast on LED panels. The narration is transposed into the context of agricultural work, the room for maneuver of which depends on the vagaries of the stock market.. The lyrics of the music attribute to “Jack” connotations other than the name of the protagonist: lumberjack, handyman, jackhammer, jackpot, or audio connector. These cultural resonances underline the ambiguity of the character who passes from the role of agricultural worker to that of tightrope walker., spring-loaded puppet entrepreneur.
